Tips for Writing Helpful Report Card Comments

Report card comments don’t need to be long to be meaningful. A few specific sentences can give families a clear picture of how their child is doing at school.

When writing comments, I try to:

Start with something positive. Share a strength or improvement.
Be specific. Mention the specific skill that a student is working on or has improved.
Keep the language straightforward. Avoid educational jargon whenever possible.
Mention an area for growth when needed. Focus on skills the student is continuing to develop.
End on an encouraging note. A quick positive statement will feel supportive.
