If you’re looking for September activities for first grade, I’ve gathered some of my favorite resources for fluency, writing, phonics, reading comprehension, grammar, thematic learning, and even those days when you need a substitute!
📖 September Fluency Activities
September is a great time to begin building strong reading fluency routines. Repeated reading with familiar, accessible text gives students opportunities to work on accuracy, expression, and confidence as readers.
September Poems
Poetry is one of my favorite ways to practice fluency, expression, and more in first grade. My September Poems give students short, engaging texts that they can read again and again. We read them together as a class, they have their Poetry Journal for independent reading, and we have a poetry station for partner practice.
Because students become familiar with the poems, they can focus less on figuring out what to do and more on becoming smooth, confident readers.
Short Vowel Decodable Passages
At the beginning of first grade, many students still need lots of practice reading short vowel words. Short Vowel Decodable Passages give students a chance to apply their phonics skills while reading connected text.
These work well for small groups, independent practice, intervention, or extra fluency practice throughout the week.
✏️ September Writing Activities
Writing can feel overwhelming for young students at the beginning of the year. In September, I like writing activities that provide plenty of support while still giving students opportunities to share their own ideas.
Trace, Read, Write, Draw
For students who aren’t quite ready for open-ended writing, Trace, Read, Write & Draw Writing Activities offer a more supportive option.
Students trace and read the topic word and then write or draw what they know. I love these because they make writing feel inviting and low-pressure while still encouraging students to work independently. I’ve added this to my writing station this year and my emergent writers love it!
September Writing Prompts
My September Writing Prompts give students seasonal and age-appropriate topics to write about. They are an easy addition to your writing station, morning work, independent writing time, or even fast finisher activities.

🔤 September Phonics Activities
September is all about building a strong phonics foundation. Short vowels are an important focus at the beginning of first grade, and I like giving students multiple ways to practice the same skills.
Trace, Read & Write Short Vowels
My Trace, Read & Write Short Vowel Activities provide structured practice with short vowel words. Students get repeated exposure to phonics patterns while practicing reading, writing, and spelling.
These are easy to use during word work, literacy stations, small groups, morning work, or independent practice.
Short Vowel Decodable Books
Once students have practiced short vowel patterns at the word level, Short Vowel Decodable Books give them an opportunity to use those skills while reading connected text.
These simple books are especially helpful early in the year when students are learning that the phonics skills we practice can help them actually read books! My emergent readers beg for more of these books because they are experiencing reading SUCCESS!

Even while students are developing decoding and fluency skills, we can begin building strong comprehension habits. In September, I like to keep comprehension practice focused and manageable.
Fall Differentiated Reading Passages
Students enter first grade at many different reading levels. My Fall Differentiated Fiction Passages make it easier to provide comprehension practice while meeting students where they are. With three levels for each story, you can find what your students need!
Ask and Answer Questions Reading Comprehension Activities
Our first comprehension skill we work on is asking and answering questions about a text. My Ask and Answer Questions Reading Comprehension Activities give students focused practice answering questions about key details.
I like introducing this skill early because it becomes part of so much of the reading work we do throughout the year.
📝 September Grammar Activities
September is also a good time to begin introducing basic grammar skills. Keeping the activities simple and consistent helps first graders learn the vocabulary they’ll use throughout the year.
Noun Activities for 1st Grade
Learning about nouns is a natural place to begin. Students can identify people, places, things, and animals in the world around them, making nouns an accessible grammar skill for beginning first graders.

Verb Activities for 1st Grade
Once students understand nouns, we can start looking at the actions those nouns perform!

I love mixing a few seasonal activities into our regular academic routines. They make familiar skills feel fresh without requiring an entirely different classroom routine.

Apples are a classic September theme for a reason! Apple Activities can bring a little seasonal fun into the classroom while students continue practicing important first-grade skills.
They are perfect for adding a touch of fall to your literacy stations, independent work, or September lessons.
Fall Reader’s Theater
Fall Reader’s Theater is another fun way to bring the season into your literacy block.
Reader’s theater gives students an authentic reason to reread text, which makes it especially useful for practicing fluency. Students can practice their parts with a group and work on reading smoothly and with expression while enjoying a fun fall theme.
📋 September Sub Plans
We all know those back to school germs can get us! My August & September Sub Plans are designed around the types of skills first graders are actually learning and practicing at this point in the school year.
Having plans prepared ahead of time means one less thing to worry about when an unexpected absence comes up. Keep them ready to go, and you’ll be very glad you did!
Make September a Little Easier
September is such an important month in first grade. Students are still learning routines, building independence, and developing the foundational skills they’ll use all year long.
You don’t need elaborate activities to keep them learning and engaged. A few dependable resources that students can learn to use independently can make your literacy block run much more smoothly.
