10 October Activities for 1st Grade

October is one of my favorite months in the classroom, but it’s a busy one! We have conferences, a field trip, and our Fall Festival…all in October!

I love bringing a little fall and Halloween fun into our learning without completely changing what we’re already working on. Over the years, I’ve created quite a few October activities that I can easily work into reading, phonics, writing, math, and even those extra-busy days when I need something simple and ready to go.

Here are 10 of my favorite October activities for 1st grade that keep kids learning while still letting us enjoy the season!

1. Build Fluency with October Poems

October poems are an easy way to bring a little seasonal fun into your literacy routine! I use poems for repeated reading and fluency practice, along with practicing phonics skills and high-frequency words. They’re perfect for whole-group reading, partner practice, or a literacy station throughout the month.

2. Build Pumpkin Towers

I grabbed 6 mini pumpkins at the store for this one. Then, grab whatever building materials you already have in your classroom: cubes, pattern blocks, Legos, or other manipulatives. Divide students into small groups. Give them 5–10 minutes to build the tallest tower they can that will hold a small pumpkin and stay standing. It’s a simple, low-prep STEM challenge that encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and lots of trial and error!

3. Get Kids Writing with October Writing Prompts

October writing prompts are an easy way to add some seasonal fun to your writing time! Use fall, pumpkins, Halloween, or other October topics to get students excited about writing! These prompts work well for your writing station, independent writing, early finishers, or morning work. And…there’s a kid-friendly writing checklist at the bottom of each prompt!

4. Read Some Fantastic Fall Books

One of the easiest ways to bring fall into the classroom is with great read-alouds! Mix fun fall stories with nonfiction books about leaves, pumpkins, apples, and the changing seasons.

5. Learn and Have Fun with Pumpkin Activities

Pumpkins are great for October learning! Pumpkin-themed activities make it easy to mix seasonal fun with reading, writing, math, and science practice. Students can learn about pumpkins, practice important skills, and complete fun pumpkin activities throughout the month!

6. Challenge Young Thinkers with Halloween Logic Puzzles

My 1st graders LOVE learning how to do logic puzzles and these add a little Halloween fun for the season! These puzzles give kids a chance to practice problem-solving, critical thinking, and reasoning as they use clues to figure out each answer. They’re great for morning work, fast finishers, partner activities, or an easy Halloween activity that still keeps kids learning.

7. Build Fluency with Fall Reader’s Theater Plays

Fall Reader’s Theater plays are great way to work on fluency while bringing a little seasonal fun into reading time. I have partner plays that are perfect for my literacy stations partners to read together. Sometimes, I use 4 person plays with students in reading groups, too! Anything that’s a little different always ups the engagement!

8. Add Nonfiction Reading with Fall Passages

Fall-themed informational passages are an easy way to bring the season into reading while building nonfiction comprehension skills. Students can learn about interesting fall topics while practicing skills like finding facts and details, answering questions, and using information from the text. I like to use them for independent reading practice, reading groups, or at-home practice.

9. Cover Math and Literacy with an October Activity Pack

My October Math and Literacy Pack is filled with fall-themed activities that give students extra practice with the skills and concepts we’re working on in 1st grade. Instead of adding something completely new, I can easily work these activities into our regular math and literacy routines for stations, small groups, independent practice, morning work, or extra review throughout the month.

10. Be Ready for a Day Off with October and November Sub Plans

When those fall germs hit, having something ready to go can make an unexpected day off a whole lot easier! My October and November Sub Plan materials are filled with print-and-go activities that focus on skills and concepts 1st graders are already working on. Just print the pages you need, leave them for your sub, and know your students will have meaningful practice while you’re away.
